In December 2015 New Orleans City Council voted to remove four confederate statues that have been up for over 100 years. After years of death threats to construction companies that signed on to the removal project, the city of New Orleans took the lead and removed all four monuments in April and May of 2017.

Liberty Place Battle Monument in 2016. It memorializes a post Civil War attack on reconstruction appointed police by the White League to take control of the state government in 1874. By 1891 the monument was put up, and in 1932 a inscription recognizing white supremacy was added. For the last thirty years this monument has been moved and changed for its controversial meaning. The monument was the first to be removed in New Orleans at the end of April 2017.
